How the New Mexico SNAP Calculator Works

The calculator mirrors the Income Support Division's own order of operations. First the 200% gross screen, then deductions, then the benefit math.

You enter your household size, monthly income, and shelter costs. The tool answers three questions in sequence.

Question one: does your gross income clear the 200% screen for your household size? Question two: what do deductions pull your net income down to?

Question three: what does the benefit formula pay after subtracting 30% of net from the maximum? That three-step chain is exactly how ISD caseworkers score applications.

The tool stores nothing and asks for nothing personal. Numbers in, numbers out, in about two minutes.

Treat the estimate as a strong preview rather than a promise. A caseworker can still find income or a deduction your quick math missed.

Who Runs New Mexico SNAP Now

If you searched for the Human Services Department lately, you noticed the name change. New Mexico folded HSD into the new Health Care Authority, or HCA.

SNAP itself lives inside HCA's Income Support Division, usually shortened to ISD. Same staff, same offices, different letterhead.

ISD handles food benefits, cash assistance, and Medicaid screening from field offices in all 33 counties. Central intake runs through the Consolidated Customer Service Center at 1-800-283-4465.

That number does double duty. It is also the EBT card help desk, open weekdays 8:00 am to 4:30 pm for card questions.

Mail for the division goes to ISD, P.O. Box 2348, Santa Fe, NM 87504. Documents can be faxed to 1-855-804-8960 instead.

Older sites still say HSD or point to hsd.state.nm.gov addresses. All of them land at HCA eventually — but the fast route is hca.nm.gov.

Eligibility Rules the State Enforces

New Mexico starts from the federal rulebook and then widens it. HCA spells out the basics on its SNAP page in plain language.

You must be a U.S. citizen or a qualified lawful resident, with proper identification. You must list everyone who lives and eats with you.

The household test groups people who buy and prepare food together. A spouse and children under 22 almost always belong in your group.

Then comes the money screen. Thanks to the state's broad-based categorical eligibility waiver, most New Mexico households qualify at 200% of the federal poverty level.

The house you live in never counts against you. Cars follow their own rules, and retirement accounts stay out of sight for most families.

Households with a member 60 or older or disabled get a gentler path. Miss the gross screen, and they can still qualify under the federal net-income track.

Work rules round out the picture. Some recipients must join a work program, and the new 80-hour activity rules now cover adults 18 to 64.

New Mexico SNAP Income Limits Through September 2026

Two numbers decide your fate at the door. The 200% screen applies to most households, while the 100% net line matters for the rest.

The federal 130% gross test still exists on paper. New Mexico's waiver simply lifts most households past it.

These figures run from October 1, 2025 through September 30, 2026. USDA adjusts them every fall for inflation.

Count gross income before taxes: wages, self-employment, Social Security, child support, unemployment, and pensions. Weekly pay multiplies by 4 and biweekly pay by 2.

A family of four earning $5,200 a month clears the screen with room to spare. At $5,500, the waiver alone still opens the door for some cases.

One caution: senior and disabled households that miss the 200% line do not automatically fail. Their caseworker reruns the numbers under the federal rules instead.

The Asset Question in New Mexico

Here is the rule national sites keep getting wrong. New Mexico attaches no asset test to most SNAP households.

Your checking account, savings, retirement fund, and paid-off car stay invisible under the waiver. A family with $20,000 in the bank can qualify on income alone.

The application may still ask what you own. Answer honestly — the question routes you, not disqualifies you.

Two narrow exceptions bring the old federal limits back. Households with a disqualified member face $3,000 in resources, or $4,500 with a senior or disabled member.

Seniors and disabled applicants who miss the gross screen fall back to that same federal track. For everyone else, assets simply do not matter.

New Mexico SNAP Deductions That Raise Your Benefit

Passing the screen earns you a test. Claiming deductions decides how generous the test becomes.

The earned income deduction quietly rewards work. Every $100 you gross only counts as $80 of testable income.

Shelter math takes rent or mortgage plus utilities, then subtracts half your adjusted income. Anything above that line counts, up to the $744 cap.

Medical costs matter for older households. Prescriptions, transport to appointments, and insurance premiums all count once they pass $35.

Report every deduction at application time. ISD will not guess about your childcare bill or pharmacy receipts.

How the Math Works: An Albuquerque Family of Three

Change one variable and the answer moves. A $300 raise costs Ana about $90 in benefits — the formula claws back 30 cents per net dollar.

That trade still favors work. The raise wins every time, and deductions keep the clawback smaller than people fear.

How Much Food Stamps Will I Get in New Mexico?

The maximum depends only on household size. Your net income then pulls the number down by 30 cents per dollar.

One person living alone draws up to $298 — about $9.90 a day across a 30-day month. Tight, but real.

A family of four tops out at $994, which works out to roughly $249 per person. Per-person value shrinks as households grow.

Zero-income households land at the maximum. Retirees between checks, students off-semester, and laid-off workers often sit exactly there.

The minimum benefit for one or two people is $24. Households of three or more that pass every test receive their full calculated amount.

Mark October 1 on your calendar. FY 2027 goes live then: $306 for one person, $1,023 for a family of four, and a $25 minimum.

USDA locked those cost-of-living figures in August 2026. The standard deduction climbs to $217 and the shelter cap to $769 at the same time.

New Mexico's own screens stay put through the change. The 200% gate belongs to the state, not the federal adjustment.

New Mexico spreads deposits across 20 days — longer than most states. The head of household's SSN digits pick your day.

Cash works on a different clock — those deposits land on the 1st, even across weekends. A partial benefit usually posts the day after processing.

Anything you do not spend carries over to next month instead of expiring.

Approved after the 15th on an expedited case? A special combined schedule stretches your first deposits over five months.

How to Apply for SNAP in New Mexico Through YesNM

One portal covers nearly everything. YesNM at yes.nm.gov takes applications for SNAP, Medicaid, TANF cash assistance, LIHEAP energy help, and childcare.

That single-application design matters for food benefits. Households chasing a TANF estimate often discover SNAP eligibility on the same screen.

You can apply at any time of day. Create a YesNM login, fill out the application, and upload documents straight from your phone.

Prefer paper? Download the application from HCA's site in English, Spanish, Vietnamese, or Chinese, then mail it in or drop it at a field office.

Phone routes work too. The Consolidated Customer Service Center answers at 1-800-283-4465, weekdays from 7:00 am to 6:30 pm.

The ISD Information Line at 1-855-309-3766 runs 24/7. It plays back case details when the office is closed.

After you submit, expect an interview call in about ten days. Your assigned worker will list exactly what proof to bring or upload.

The decision letter arrives within 30 days. Crisis households — under $100 in cash or grossing under $150 monthly — get expedited benefits inside 7 days.

Using Your New Mexico EBT Card

New Mexico issues benefits on an EBT card that works like a debit card. Your first card mails on the first working day after ISD receives your application.

Expect it within about 7 days of applying. If it never shows, call the help desk at 1-800-283-4465.

Lost or stolen card? Deactivate it instantly through the ebtEDGE app, at ebtedge.com, or by calling FIS at 1-800-843-8303, around the clock.

A replacement costs $1.25, so hold onto your card even after cases close. Cards carry a decades-long expiration date.

Check your balance three ways: keep receipts, log into ebtEDGE, or call the FIS line. Always confirm the balance before a big shop.

Your four-digit PIN activates the card. Choose it by phone, never write it down, and never share it — PIN-authorized spending is not reimbursed.

Moved recently? Call 1-800-283-4465 to update your address before ordering a replacement, or your card mails to the wrong door.

The card buys groceries, seeds, and plants at grocery stores, farmers markets, and qualifying online retailers. It cannot cover hot foods, alcohol, tobacco, or cleaning products.

Work Rules: 80 Activity Hours Since January 1, 2026

New Mexico started enforcing the federal time limit early. ABAWD rules first hit adults 18 to 54 on January 1, 2025.

Federal legislation then widened the band. Since January 1, 2026, adults ages 18 to 64 must complete 80 activity hours a month to keep benefits.

The state expects about 55,000 New Mexicans to fall under those rules. HCA built an entire campaign — Keep Your Benefits NM — around them.

The hours are flexible by design. A job, job training, school, or volunteering all count, and you can combine them to reach 80.

Keep records of every hour. Caseworkers ask for proof at renewals, and a missing log is the fastest way to lose coverage.

Many people are exempt — parents with young children, medically certified adults, pregnant participants, veterans, and people experiencing homelessness among them.

Three monthly misses inside three years trigger a time-limit cutoff. Finish the clock later by resuming hours — benefits can restart.

Immigrant Eligibility and the State Backstop

Federal law narrowed SNAP eligibility for some lawfully present immigrants in 2026. The change reaches New Mexico through renewals.

At renewal, HCA now reviews immigration status under the new rules. Some customers who previously qualified for federal SNAP no longer do.

Lawful permanent residents, Cuban-Haitian entrants, and COFA nationals keep their path. Refugees, asylees, and parolees face the narrowed federal door.

Here is the New Mexico part worth knowing. The state funded a one-time backstop payment for customers who lost federal benefits after January 1.

Children in mixed-status households complicate the math. Eligible kids can still receive benefits even when adults in the home cannot.

SUN Bucks: $120 for School-Age Kids

New Mexico runs Summer EBT, branded locally as SUN Bucks. Each eligible school-age child receives $120 for summer groceries.

Most families get it automatically. Children on SNAP, TANF, certain Medicaid categories, or in foster care are streamlined in with no application.

For school year 2025-2026, payments went out June 15, with follow-up issuances on July 15 and a final batch on September 15.

The application window closed August 22, 2026. Families who missed it should watch for next summer's cycle and keep school meal applications current.

SNAP cases run on certification periods. When yours ends, ISD mails a renewal packet that you must return to keep benefits flowing.

Do the whole renewal inside YesNM. The portal saves your answers, flags missing documents, and timestamps the submission.

SNAP Across New Mexico's Cities and Counties

ISD staffs field offices across all 33 counties. Standard lobby hours run 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday.

Albuquerque holds three offices: 1041 Lamberton Place NE in the north, 3280 Bridge Blvd SW in the south, and 1711 Randolph Road SE.

Two small offices keep odd hours. The Santa Rosa office opens 8:00 to noon, and Lordsburg opens Tuesdays only, 9:00 to 4:00.

In Las Cruces, Rio Rancho, Santa Fe, Gallup, and Farmington, use HCA's field office finder for the current address and phone of your county's office.

Tribal communities have options too. Most pueblos and nations take state-administered SNAP, while some run federal Food Distribution programs on their own terms.

Rural households without a nearby office can do everything remotely. Apply by phone, upload documents, and interview by phone when travel is hard.

The Error Rate Problem and Your Fair Hearing

New Mexico has a quality problem it does not hide. A June 2026 federal audit scored the payment error rate at 16.6%, fifth highest nationally.
